If Turbine is following a pattern, every other month has themed markers. There were several titles added during the month the quest was introduced. Several were the generic explorer titles for finding X number of markers, and the others were the theme reward titles. The only two possible theme titles left from that first patch are Daredevil and Spelunker.

I can guess that Spelunker either means inside caves (the landscape object) or inside dungeons. Going on that plus the ulgrim hints, I went to his island and checked out his dungeon, but didn't find a marker.

I really don't know what Daredevil could be, other than dangerous locations, or locations involving heights/jumps.

--An Adventurer 17:04, 23 July 2009 (UTC)

5 Markers found, no title hint yet. Either this means some (up to 3) of the markers are actually from last patch, or (coincidentally) only the none-title ones have been found, or there is no theme.

This would mean, however, a break in the pattern of themed-no/themed markers. Until now we had (trying to summarize :) ):

  1. Mountain Climber (5 themed) - January Patch
  2. Amateur Explorer (20 Markers found) - February Patch
  3. Party Goer (5 themed) - March Patch
  4. Experienced Explorer (40 Markers found) - April Patch
  5. Crater Crasher (5 themed) - May Patch
  6. Adept Explorer (60 Markers found) - June Patch

This leaves (undiscovered titles from portal.dat of January Patch):

  1. Daredevil, Sky Diver or Spelunker - July Patch
  2. Master Explorer (80 found?) - August Patch
  3. Daredevil, Sky Diver or Spelunker - Sept. Patch
  4. Elite Explorer (100 found?) - October Patch

The one in the Cave for the PT Olthoi Queen just screams for the "Spelunker" theme, but nogo. The Iceberg one also refers to spelunking...

Now, with the Crater Crasher theme, the one in the Aerlinthe Caldera was also screaming to be a "themed" one, but it was not. So my wild guess at this moment the theme is "Spelunking", but what keeps the title-message from popping up? Until now, we had none at all in dungeons. But both the Iceberg one and the PT Cave suggest it *is* possible for a marker to show up in "open access" dungeons. Just a few ideas which immediately come to mind to this sort of dungeons:

  • Sword of Bellenesse
  • Small Mukkir Slayers (Fledgling Mukkir Nests)
  • Deru Tree
  • Snake Tunnels (Radiant Mana Infusion)
  • Tracing the Stone dungeon in GY
  • Both "Deep"s (ok, small spelunks, but still)
  • The Tusker Emporium on AL
  • Old Scratchy's Cave

If anyone remembers by heart where there were more of the "open access" dungeons.. I'm gonna start with the ones I listed.

--Sanddh 17:27, 25 July 2009 (CET)

Well Spelunker is the theme this month. I think it will be pretty hard considering the one known spelunker marker is deep within a dungeon. Now, since spelunking literally means exploring caves, should we limit ourselves to the natural cave-like dungeons or not? There are some obvious dungeons that would be good to check like Adventurer's Haven and Subway, but they are not natural cave structures.

edit: And would olthoi dungeons be considered natural caves? Some place like the bottom of the Black Death Catacombs or deep in the Catacombs of Opposition (Olthoi Hunter Town) would be a good location for a marker.

--An Adventurer 18:43, 26 July 2009 (UTC)

Looks like my hunch was a good one. I found a marker in the BDC deeper catacombs. I did a partial check of the BDC and the Catacombs of opposition, but I didn't find anything and wouldn't expect to with the marker I found.

With the spelunker markers found so far, it looks like any dungeon could have a marker - its not limited to caves/natural dungeons, or original dungeons, or anything.

I have no idea where to check. But, if I had to start somewhere, I might go with dungeons in the a'mun desert or the blackmire swamp, since those areas are the most barren on the overall marker map.

--An Adventurer 20:27, 31 July 2009 (UTC)

I've confirmed that the 5th exploration marker is in the Eater Pit. This dungeon can only be entered while doing the Knights of Karlun Quest, which can only be completed once.

Secrets of the Apostates

Discussion

All the Crater Crasher markers have been discovered, and we are now back to the usual futile attempt to find the stand-alone markers. There will be some confusion this month as we missed two from last month. For now, all stand-alone markers should be listed from this current patch unless we get developer confirmation that a marker was added in April.

I have used Cell Converter and MakeMeAMap. The only changes shown on actual land are in Baishi (new PvP thing), Zaik (new quest), and a large area of the direlands near the crystalline crag. I have not yet investigated this big change, but I assume it has something to do with either the new Zaik quest or the updates at the Crag. It is possible that a new marker is hidden there, as the area is 14 large landblocks. However, AC explorer shows no existing POIs of any kind in this area, nor do I recall any being there.

--An Adventurer 20:26, 19 May 2009 (UTC)

That area is the exit of the Crystalline Portal (130+) dungeon. No exploration markers in it.

--Widgeon 20:38, 19 May 2009 (UTC)

I am fairly sure the freebooter keep marker is new to this month, it is unlikely I would have missed it last patch when I was scanning for markers at the keep. I have placed it under may until a dev comment tells me to do otherwise, or someone can confirm they saw it in april. --An Adventurer 15:22, 20 May 2009 (UTC)

99.9% sure the ones in Beach Fort and Linthe are new this patch. Checked both areas last time, but since I'm using the "[" keys, I might have missed them. --Sanddh 21:36, 22 May 2009 (CET)

I am out of ideas on where to look for the remaining two. The only thing I can think of is looking at the total marker map, there are a few spots that lack any markers. These areas include: most of the A'mun Desert, the Yushad Ridge, the Blackmire Swamp, the grasslands between the Yushad and the snowflake mountains, the Tiofor Woods, the Halaetan Isles and the wooded/plateau area around danby's. There is of course nothing that states the devs want to evenly distribute markers across the land, but I don't have any better ideas.

As for the two markers from last month, I still think one of them might be related to Grael, but as you can see from the checked locations, Grael related POIs are all but exhausted. --An Adventurer 15:51, 21 May 2009 (UTC)

Checking Grael & Mukkir dungeons --Sanddh 15:08, 1 May 2009 (CET)

Seems to me, the Markers are in far more "dangerous" places then last patches. And for the first time, one which needs "flagging" (the DI one). Also (See map), the Markers are more on the outer borders of Dereth. I'm out of Mukkir/Grael clues. So will start checking "dangerous" area POIs, on Caul, Isle of Ruins, Vissidal, Linthe etc. --Sanddh 14:36, 3 May 2009 (CET)

It looks like we have 4 Grael locations found, and 3 non-themed locations found. I'd assume the following: There is at least 1 more grael location, bringing the total to 5. There is no official theme, because there are not enough markers left for 5 themed ones.

I have not yet spent time looking for markers because I am still a little burned out from the last few batches. I think the exterior map locations is a good theme to go with. Caul, the Halaetans, and Vissidal are all places I would check. They also all have a few Grael themed locations, some of which may still be unchecked. --An Adventurer 13:24, 5 May 2009 (CDT)

The Tusker Island one, near drop, might be another pattern? Since the Vaeshok one is near DI drop, the new ML one next to the drop from Danby? Island drops? Checked Linthe from top to bottom, but nogo. Though I'm using the item search keys, so might have missed one. And yah.. I'm slightly burned out too... --Sanddh 22:26, 5 May 2009 (CET)

Just a hunch, gonna start checking Tent POIs... --Sanddh 20:20, 10 March 2009 (CET)

To: Sanddh
If the undead encampment near Ithaenc is indeed part of an unofficial theme, I would check other locations related to the events of the Fourth Sending of Darkness, Anadil, Sand Kings, and undead. But then again, I always try to find a theme based on the lore/purpose of the location, and last month our theme was green portals... --An Adventurer 14:41, 10 March 2009 (CDT)

Was checking associations with Undead.. and near Al-Jalima (Undead Invasion, the nearby Forbidden Crypts dungeon), and found one. Guess we might indeed have a lore-oriented theme this time? --Sanddh 22:10, 10 March 2009 (CET)

The Banderling Fort is reachable by Anadil cottage portal, so another lore hint? Been running around Sand Kings settlement, but no luck finding anything. I don't see the link for the Empyrean Landmark near Eastham with the lore though. Maybe the last one isn't lore related? --Sanddh 18:39, 12 March 2009 (CET)

To: Sanddh
Wow, good catch on the settlement name. It could just be a coincidence, but still a nice catch. There is a settlement called Sand Kings Cottages east of Tufa and south of Samsur. It is right by a former Shadowspire crater. When the servers are back online, that wouldn't be a bad place to look.

The eastham landmark, as far as I know, has zero lore significance. It is just a small ruin with a low level drudge camp. And there are no settlements nearby it that have anything to do with sand kings. The closest settlements are Strathelar's Watch and North Eastham Meadow.

The Al-Jalima petroglyph also has no official lore connecting it to the undead or the sand kings. If anything, the petroglyph is a yalain relic.

--An Adventurer 15:18, 14 March 2009 (CDT)

To: An Adventurer
I guess that the Sand King clue is indeed exhausted :(. The direct lore hints are all searched, and I tried a few that are at least 2 steps away, i.e. anything with undead. Been using the POIs mentioned in GoArrow, the original map, and the map (till 08-2006) on AC Warcry for them. But I'm afraid, the remaining one, like the Eastham one, is totally unrelated. The Eastham Landmark is also so small, I haven't seen it mentioned on any map or plugin as far as I know. The fact that it might be so unrelated that it involves searching about anything, makes me tired to think about it. The fun is a bit gone from my part... But could you maybe add those POIs you searched? Just so I don't try the ones already done :). Cause I will probably keep running around aimlessly. Will concentrate on A'mun desert for now, and then move to Aerlinthe. --Sanddh 7:22, 16 March 2009 (CET)

None of the themed markers for this update have been found - if there is a theme this time. Last month we had 5 themed and 5 not. Looking at the list of unused titles added in Shifting Tactics, the following could be themes to look for:

  1. Daredevil - Hard to reach places that require difficult jumps or are surrounded by creatures. Or evil/shadowy places, focusing on the "devil"
  2. Spelunker - underground in caves/dungeons
  3. Party Goer - Festival grounds/festival stones/casinos/chess/mini games
  4. Crater Crasher - crater sites - old shadow spire locations, the major volcanos, OP, all the craters in the south direlands

--An Adventurer 13:59, 11 February 2009 (CST)

Update: I was able to locate the slaughterhouse and saadia's retreat locations using the MakeMeAMap program. I do not see any other landscape locations using this method. Now, last month, 3 of the locations evaded detection from cell.dat cracks - perhaps turbine has found out what caused this and is able to reproduce it. Or perhaps it merely happened again by coincidence.

My thoughts are that this month the theme is underground - that is, dungeons. I would guess there is still 1 landscape marker, but it is not being picked up by the mapping program. I have an idea on what dungeons to check. The location near Plateau village is where one buys the key used in the Inner Dungeon near Plateau. And another location is outside Saadia's Retreat. Both the Inner Dungeon and Saadia's Retreat are dungeons from the Explorer/Walking Boots quest. It may be a good idea to check the 20 alloy piece dungeons. --An Adventurer 15:54, 11 February 2009 (CST)

edit: I updated the Undead Mechanic Quest with a location map + dungeon map links --An Adventurer 16:23, 11 February 2009 (CST)

I just finished my check of the alloy dungeons. After thoroughly exploring all 20 dungeons I did not find any explorer markers. The good news is I have all the alloy pieces and can finish the guide for the undead mechanic quest. The bad news is I am unsure of where to check next. --An Adventurer 21:22, 13 February 2009 (CST)

I found the 6th marker, and it did not belong to a set. I would guess that the remaining 4 do not belong to a set either. I'm going to stop searching by theme now. --An Adventurer 19:37, 14 February 2009 (CST)

With the 7th Marker, can't help but notice we got 3 Markers very well hidden on towers/structures/forts (can't be seen from outside), 3 directly near dungeons, and 1 near portals (the SE Dire Crater one). Can't see a theme to neither the tower structures nor the dungeons, but going to check Towers & forts, if I find the time. The tusker one is btw the first one not on the mainland, which means not just mainland POIs are candidates for Markers... sigh. And there's lots of Towers & dungeons in Dereth... --Sanddh 1:37, 16 February 2009 (CET)

I can see a lot of patterns that apply to 2 or 3 of them, but each new marker found adds new patterns or breaks old ones. I would say that most of the patterns are not intentional, and it is just the human brain doing what it does best. But here at the patterns I see:

  • 3 or 4 are just outside of themed dungeons. Saadia's Reatreat - Walking Boots dungeon. Brood Hive - Olthoi Armor dungeon. Izji Qo's temple - falatacot temple quest dungeon. Tusker Gauntlet - it is not a theme like tusker tusks, but there is the general theme of tusker hunting dungeons on those isles.
  • 5 are near points from last month. Slaughterhouse is near the teth mountain. Plateau is near Lake Lithanen. Brood hive is near the olthoi north cliff. Saadia's is near the Lin mountain. Tusker gauntlet is near Dryreach. In fact, Izji Qo's temple is also not far from Teth. The only one from this month that isn't near an old one is the SE dires crater - it is pretty far away from withered beach.
  • 2 are in towers - slaughterhouse and plateau.
  • All the markers are in outer areas - there are none in the central area of dereth.

But like I said, each new one found makes coming up with a theme more difficult. The Crater ruined the nearby old markers idea. Tusker ruined the mainland only, and the dungeon markers belonging to a set of themed dungeons. --An Adventurer 15:31, 16 February 2009 (CST)

On Feb 25th NoWorries posted the following clue for the two markers that remain unfound:

Both remaining markers are near portals
Both markers come very close to making equilateral triangles with other markers
Both of these triangles would share an already found marker to make these triangles, yet one of the remaining markers is currently on snow and one is not. And at both markers you can see water.

--An Adventurer 16:35, 25 February 2009 (CST)

For anyone interested, using perfect equilateral triangles, with 18 markers available, I count 306 possible unique triangles that can be drawn. For some of these, the 3rd point would be off the game map, in the ocean, or otherwise unreachable. More would not be near water. But that is still a lot of possible locations, especially when NoWorries said "very close to making equilateral triangle" which leaves some room to slide points around.

My math was (17 * 2) + (16 * 2) + (15 * 2) + (14 * 2) + (13 * 2) + (12 * 2) + (11 * 2) + (10 * 2) + (9 * 2) + (8 * 2) + (7 * 2) + (6 * 2) + (5 * 2) + (4 * 2) + (3 * 2) + (2 * 2) + (1 * 2) = 306 --An Adventurer 00:14, 26 February 2009 (CST)

I've generated a small map that shows the currently snow covered areas. The markers don't stand out as well on it, but maybe it'll help. --Widgeon 08:17, 26 February 2009 (CST)

Discussion

Update: I've ran a Cell.dat converter and MakeMeAMap, and I do not see any new changes on the landscape - this is after I had already visited the 7 locations. I know its "cheating", but I think the ACVault staff did the same thing - that would explain why they had the first 7 listed so quickly but have made no progress since then. Regardless, I do not think there are any more markers left to be found on the surface - I think the remaining 3 are underground. One thing I am unsure of, though, is if the inside of bunkers, houses, and such are located within the same landblock as their outside structure. If not, the 3 remaining markers could be inside landscape POIs --An Adventurer 15:12, 13 January 2009 (CST)

scratch that, I just tried the same thing on a fresh copy of this month's cell.dat from my laptop, and I do not see any landscape changes on that one either. So the remaining two can be outside. --An Adventurer 15:54, 13 January 2009 (CST)

The NPC talks about themes, I guess this month's theme is mountain climbing. The question is, how many markers are themed.. since there are 5 mountain climb markers found, and 4, well, I can't really see a theme in it? Been running around between Baishi and Q'al, haven't found anything, but well, Alinco doesn't pick them up, GoArrow's find-function only when you are really near, and they are harder to spot than the gift boxes of last patch. So I do wonder how 8 of them popped up relatively quickly on AC Vault? And how was the 9th found? Please help a by now rather frustrated explorer :) -- Sanddh 14:30, 14 January 2009 (CET)

The ninth marker was found by a player on Leafcull, who announced it on general chat and then I added it to the wiki. Another player had been asking if anyone had checked Linvak, so I guess somebody finally did check. --Widgeon 03:10, 15 January 2009 (CST)

@Sanddh, they used the graphac/mapac as well. It shows the landblock changes for most of the markers. -- Quanta 15:05, 14 January 2009 (EST)

Strange then, that at least the Linvak did not show up that way... or one of the others, if I understand Adventurer right. Since until now, all Markers have been on the surface. And for the second theme, if any, if the Dryreach hadn't been there, I would have thought it being "water", since the Holt, the Lake one and the Obsidian Spawn are all near water. But alas... Dryreach is quite, well.. dry. However, I will give it a try, and my next project will be running along River Prosper from beginning to end I guess..... -- Sanddh 21:25, 14 January 2009 (CET)

My guestimation is that there are 5 mountain climber markers and 5 "miscllaneous" markers. I have no justification for this, other than that it's symmetrical. There have been two markers in the north mountains, two in the south, one in the n dires mountains, and the other markers in north/central Osteth. <redacted, don't want to lead people down a possibly incorrect path> -- Quanta 12:38, 14 January 2009 (EST)

Has anyone searched the southern landbridge? I looked on the isle of tears and in some of the desert mountains... --Belwyvair 18:29, 14 January 2009 (CST)

Possibly, but I find it interesting that SPD says to look "on, above and below Dereth." Taken literally, this would mean that there are markers either below sea level or in dungeons. So, the remaining marker could fit into the "below" category, or the NPC may just be referring to markers to come in future months. -- Quanta 23:45, 14 January 2009 (EST)
Interesting idea, also because the new titles in the patch tree, which unfortunately don't have any further references, indicate this above (Mountain Climber, Sky Diver) and below (Spelunker). But the Mountain Climber Markers give a special message, the other ones do not, so I guess they are "theme-less". Anyone tested other "almost unclimbable" Mountains? Such as Caul, Obsidian Rim, and VoD?-- Sanddh 7:01, 15 January 2009 (CET)
Great point. So are we ruling out sky diver and spelunker as future titles, and that the remaining marker is likely part of the mountain climber series? I spent last night running around the Alphus Range (Mt. Alphus, Mt. Syliph, etc) and ran from my house by the yaraq hall of metos up to al-jalima. Then I ran around in the Tiofor Woods which seems to be below sea level. Tonight I will run from Samsur to Uziz to Khayyaban. --Belwyvair 09:47, 15 January 2009 (CST)

Has anyone been able to tie this rumor from Ulgrim to a marker, if not it could be a clue to the last one: Ulgrim the Unpleasant tells you, "Oh yeah, I saw Speedy Sean coming through here, marking targets for his map quest. I'll let you in on a secret, since you were so obliging with this mug of stout. He marked the back of Claude's mask. Yep, you're going to have to scalp that old trickster to finish the task." --Bjorny 22:44, 15 January 2009 (GMT)

Also this one: 17:36:07 Ulgrim the Unpleasant tells you, "The Dereth Explorers Society is marking the island for map-toting adventurers, eh? I've marked parts of Dereth, too. I figure old Berkholt's stout has seen most of this island, one way or the other." --I checked Berkholt out for rumors, and one of the old rumors for the Strange Swamp Temple says "For those of an adventurous mind. I have been asked to explore a new structure found in the Direland Swamps. I am told that it lies somewhere near 41.5s, 49.5w. I will have set an Explorer Society Marker at this location if you wish to follow in my footsteps." --I ran around and to those coords, but just found old quest material. No marker.--Belwyvair 17:43, 15 January 2009 (CST)
