Player housing was first introduced in the Keep Your Enemies Closer event, though it was not fully accessible or able to be purchased at the time. Eventually, the settlements became fully functioning and required writs of refuge and various items to purchase them, players immediately began to seek out these settlements and the items required to purchase them were sought after vigorously. These settlements were scattered across Dereth in various locales, in an effort to help players locate settlements, settlement portals were added in various major cities around Dereth.

During The Gathering Storm event, a quest to gain a token which could be exchanged for a Writ of Refuge was introduced. An Arcanum Envoy also appeared that could accept the token in return for access to the Arcanum Furniture shop.

During the Betrayal event, Residential Quarters (AKA Apartments) were introduced to meet the high demand for housing at that time.
