Walk Through
1. Convenience Ties
To get to the valley for the first time, take the Far Claw Villas portal (32.9N 59.4E) in Arwic. There are no portals in the paradox olthoi valley, but you can tie to the surface portal of Olthoi Tunnels at 48N 53E for quick access to the valley. Tying to Black Death Catacombs 60N 71.1E for the second part of the quest beforehand is also helpful (take the Jeweled Thorn Estates portal (32.9N 59.4E) in Arwic). There is also a lifestone just north of the valley at 48.3N 57.4E.
2. Coruscating Olthoi Scent Gland
Everyone going will need to pick up at least one gland, they drop randomly on higher level paradox olthoi (evicerators, warriors, nobles, slashers, rippers, sentinels, etc). These are found in the valley and burrows around 44.5N 55E.
3. Kill Ward Guardian
Go inside the burrow of the Paradox-touched Olthoi Ward Guardian. This is the westernmost burrow at the back of the valley. Stick right until you come to a 4-way intersection, go SE. When you come to a large room, stick right until you leave the large room then go straight NE. After you've passed the first intersection there is only one way to go all the way to the final room where you kill the Ward Guardian. The Guardian is hollow and does mainly pierce and acid damage. Its death activates the Deeper Catacombs (Paradox) portal for six hours. (When bringing a large group into a burrow it is extremely helpful to go south of the tent, the cliff side dips down very low and you can jump down there. Have someone with high melee jump down first and pull the large groups of olthoi away from the burrow entrance, then the group can enter unimpeded. Don't start fighting until you have gone down several turns into the burrow.)
4. Deeper Catacombs
From the drop in Black Death Catacombs, travel down the first long ramp, in the large room go to the south side of the room and take the south passage where you'll find the Deeper Catacombs (Paradox) portal. At the bottom in the Egg room is an olthoi style door, everyone hands the gland to door and is portaled to the Sealed Olthoi Passage. Mark the time, you have two hours of access (if you die before reaching the queen, double click the olthoi door instead of handing another gland to be portaled inside again). Eggs can be given to an NPC in the tent for xp.
5. Sealed Olthoi Passage
From the drop, go left at the first intersection then stick right until you come to a square room, take the NE passage. You'll eventually come to a large room, go east then south in the room, take the passage down. Stick to the right wall and you'll come to a bridge over an acid floor, follow the bridge to the other side of the room (if anyone falls into the acid, there's a tunnel back up on the west side). At the Y intersection go right, there will be several 3 way choices that follow, go straight through the middle of all of them. When you come to the jump pit you can rebuff there or jump down (the drop is semi-safe) don't attack anything or move off platform until ready to attack the queen.
6. Paradox-touched Olthoi Queen
You land on a small ledge facing a large acid filled room with the Queen at the far side of the room. The queen can be dragged up onto the ledge to avoid fighting in the acid. Dedicated healers are very helpful, the queen can cast creature, life and item debuffs (takes buffs off weapons/wands). She also casts Canker, a level VIII undispellable acid vuln, it's recommended to stop fighting until the 1 minute vuln drops. She is true hollow so armor high in natural AL to pierce or acid primarily, slash and fire secondarily is very helpful. Mages by far do the most damage using war magic, although she is susceptible to life bolts/rings also. She frequently dispels vulns casts on her. She drops one head and about 12 Carapace Shards.
Anyone that dies can return quickly by going to a burrow east of the valley at 44.5N 57.3E. There is a portal inside behind a closed door that returns you immediately to the queen chamber (if it's been less than two hours since you handed a gland). The door is opened by using a Olthoi Cistern lever item in the far right corner of the queen room (someone will have to leave the ledge and run over to use the lever when someone is at the door waiting to get in). The queen respawns quickly so it is important that anyone that dies shortly before her death gets back quickly to loot a carapace (she spawns near the lever making it dangerous to use again if she has respawned).
7. Rewards
Return to the valley Tent at 43.8N 54.9E and give the Carapace to Wintermaine for a token. The token can be given to Wintermaine for xp, or given to one of the NPCs in a rubble strewn side passage in the northermost burrow inside the valley. The NPCs hold the reward they give (the one holding the black shield gives a shield). The queen's head also goes to Wintermaine for xp and a title (Paradox-touched Queenslayer).
Lore
Ethan Wintermaine tells you, "Greetings citizen."
Ethan Wintermaine tells you, "If you're of a mind to help quell this invasion, I have a mission for you. We've found that, with the increase in the infestation of this area, that the stronger Paradox-touched Olthoi have some capacity to pass beyond the Sealed Olthoi Passage that those aiding the Guard Swiftblade have found."
Ethan Wintermaine tells you, "Those who have hunted them have been able to use these stronger Olthoi to gain passage beyond the door themselves."
Ethan Wintermaine tells you, "Beyond that passage lies my mission for you. It's a simple one, in concept anyways."
Ethan Wintermaine smiles.
Ethan Wintermaine tells you, "Before we get to that, you'll need to bypass the Wards on the Deeper Catacombs Portal. Guard Swiftblade, in the tent behind me, has more information in bypassing the Wards. Speak to him if you need more information on that process."
Ethan Wintermaine tells you, "Go beyond the passage, find the Paradox-touched Olthoi Queen, and kill her. Bring me back proof of her death, and I'll reward you for your part in it. Be warned, however. She's not a creature to be taken lightly, or hunted alone."
Adrien Swiftblade tells you, "Greetings. If you're of a mind to help in this odd situation, I could certainly use your help."
Adrien Swiftblade tells you, "Along with the rise of these strange new Olthoi, there is a Portal, warded by powerful magics, which formed in the Black Death Catacombs. You may've seen it already, or you may not have."
Adrien Swiftblade tells you, "Anyways, I've found a way to get the wards to drop for a time. There is a Ward Guardian in a cave located in a heavily infested area nearby, around 43.6N, 55.5E. When that thing dies, the wards falter for a time."
Adrien Swiftblade tells you, "Be warned, however, the Ward Guardian has grown dramatically in strength since it first appeared. It is now as strong or stronger than those twisted bugs that wander the inner areas of the infestation, and should not be taken lightly."
Adrien Swiftblade tells you, "Once the Ward Guardian is dead, so you should be able to enter the Deeper Catacombs of the Paradox-touched Olthoi. Once in there, look for anything that may be of use to use in our research and bring it back to me."
Adrien Swiftblade tells you, "If, for some reason, the Portal is closed again when you get there, you should find the Ward Guardian in his cave and kill him again."
Adrien Swiftblade tells you, "I would hurry though, every time the Ward Guardian dies, it's either reborn, recreated, or whatever roughly six hours after its death, and the Wards return with it."
You hand over 1 of your Coruscating Olthoi Scent Glands.
As the door is touched, it emits a high-pitched keening sound, alerting the local Olthoi to the presence of an intruder.
You allow Sealed Olthoi Passage to examine your Coruscating Olthoi Scent Gland.
As you touch the gland to the door, a pulse of energy passes from the door, through the gland, and into your hand. The gland shatters, covering you in a foul smelling fluid. As you begin to reel back from the smell, you feel the familiar tug of Portalspace.
As (Player) strikes the final blow on the Paradox-touched Olthoi Ward Guardian, a high-pitched keening echoes through you mind. You feel, rather than know that the wards around the Paradox-touched Olthoi Queen's portal have failed for the time being.
As (Player) strikes the final blow against the Paradox-touched Olthoi Queen, a piercing howl fills your mind. Amidst the horrifying noise in your skull, you hear the following words, "You may have stopped me for a time, but you will never be rid of me. I am no simple insect that can be driven off or so simply destroyed. My Master will rid the world of you pathetic meatbags, and we will usher a new age into this reality."
The thunder of crushing Paradox-touched Olthoi Queen is followed by the deafening silence of death!
