In the early days of Dereth, Alatar's description was correct. Since then, a tribe of dark mosswarts has evicted the drudges and taken the fort for themselves. They guard a runed chest (resistance: 200, tier 4 Loot) and an unlocked loot chest (tier 1 Loot). Nearby is an Archmage in a tower with a lifestone.
