As of 8/29/2008 you will maintain the # of ribbons turned into the Society and the timers on all Society quests, so it will take you even longer to rank up if you rejoin a society. In addition, you lose all rank in the old society! When you complete the join Society quest again, you receive the same amount of XP and a society armor writ (3 day timer on chest pulls).
