The eerily floating Niffis cast bizarre shadows across the sands. Strangely beautiful, these creatures are, unfortunately, also aggressive. Their form suggests an affinity for water, yet many of them congregate in deserts, basking in the harsh sun and balancing themselves with their lateral “wings.” It is thought the fine-grained Derethian sand may fulfill a function similar to water for the Niffis, a creature obviously saturated with alien and incomprehensible magic. Still, some rare Niffis do appear to seek out water, suggesting these creatures may once have had more humble and ordinary origins.

Niffis are fearsome spell casters who often cast life vulnerabilities to soften their chosen morsel. They are also capable in close combat, wildly whipping their tentacles causing significant bludgeoning damage. Yet, as much as travelers dread seeing a Niffis’ form come floating across the dunes, something about this creature has caused more than a few people to stop and stare in awe -- sometimes to their regret.

The Niffis share the same home world with the Sleech. Scholars have debated the relation between the Niffis and the Sleech, whether the Sleech are a more primitive form of Niffis or whether they are a more recent development from the Niffis. Unquestionably the Sleech are of a far more foul disposition, attacking anything that wanders even remotely close. Sleech have a seemingly endless reservoir of caustic acid and spin slash with their barbed tails. The Sleech are most commonly encountered on Dark Isle. Niffis are among the most common creatures on Vissidal Island, particularly the more distant corners, and are also found on Freebooter Island.

The best weapon to use against Niffis found on Vissidal or the Mainland is Slashing. Sleeches seem to be most vulnerable to Piercing attacks, with Bludgeon running a close second. The Niffis found on Freebooter Island, however, seem unusually to be most vulnerable to Bludgeon attacks. Given their high defenses, using the appropriate weapon is a crucial edge against Niffis!
