The portal spells developed by Asheron did indeed have the capability to cross the world, and then some. But, portals are small. Try carrying a ton of lumber or iron ore across the world using human-size portals. For that matter, try riding a horse through one (that's my flailing rationalization for the lack of horses in Dereth). For freight-carrying, ships remained a significant force for the Yalain. Remember they were spread across a vast archipelago in the southeast. Sailing was in their blood, so to speak.

As for where Dereth's portals to the rest of the world went, they were sabotaged by Asheron and the surviving adepts of Knorr, to prevent the Olthoi from spreading through them. The portals at both ends were collapsed. Once, there was a vast network of portals - a sort of mass transit system spread across the entire surface of the world. But, permanent portals were tough to make (how much mana does it cost you to cast a portal for only one minute?), and only connected major population centers.
