Continuity/Names of Places and Races

There are many cultures in the world of Asheron's Call, and throughout the history of the game, different words have been used for the proper noun of the location, the adjective describing the people, and the adjective describing other things from or of that location or its people. This article will attempt to reconcile these inconsistencies.

Isparian

Aluvian

Aluvian is the adjective used to describe both people of the nation of Aluvia, and things of or from Aluvia. There are not any inconsistencies with the usage of these words.

Garondish / Gharu'ndim

Gharu'ndim and Garondish are the adjectives used to describe both people of the nation of Gharu'n, and things of or from Gharu'n. Gharu'ndim is most commonly used. Rarely, Garondish has been used.

In Universe

In the text The Reign of Alfrega, written by the Aluvian scholar Midistaff the Learned, it is written that Alfrega was dressed in winterblue silks from the Garondish lands. It is unknown when this text was written, but given that Midistaff wrote, "[Alfrega] was succeeded by her son, Osric, who would come to be known as the Wise," it had to be written during or after the reign of Osric - 810 RC or later.

In the text The Glorious Reign of Empress Kou-an written by a Sho scholar, it is said that Empress Kou-an wrote, "The Gharu'ndim, sometimes called the Garondish by outsiders." Empress Kou-an was the great granddaughter of Emperor Kou, and Emperor Kou was said to have united the Sho under his rule in 1046 RC, So this statement by Kou-an was likely written in the 1100s RC.

Game Development

Garondish only appears in three locations: in beta concept art, in The Reign of Alfrega, and in The Glorious Reign of Empress Kou-an. On the Sketches page of Turbine's beta website, there are two image files, garohouse.gif and garostore.gif, which have the alt text of garondish house corner and garondish general store. The word first appears in game in the text The Reign of Alfrega. This text was written by Stormwaltz during the beta. The word does not appear again until Asheron's Call: Dark Majesty, when it resurfaces in the text The Glorious Reign of Empress Kou-an on the AC:DM CD Lore. Garondish appears in this text with an in-universe explanation for both Garondish and Gharu'ndim being used.

Conclusion

Garondish seems to be a dated term, having not been used for possibly 200 years, and it appears to only have been used by other cultures.

Milantan / Milantane / Milantean / Milantos

Milantan, Milantane, Milantean, and Milantos are the adjectives used to describe both people of the nation of Milantos, and things of or from Milantos. There are several inconsistencies with the usage of these words.

Roulean

Roulean is the adjective used to describe both people of the nation of Roulea, and things of or from Roulea. There are not any inconsistencies with the usage of these words.

Sho

Sho is the adjective used to describe both people of the nation of Sho, and things of or from Sho. There are not any inconsistencies with the usage of these words.

Silveran

Silveran is the adjective used to describe both people of the nation of Silvera, and things of or from Silvera. There are not any inconsistencies with the usage of these words.

Souia-Vey

Souia-Vey is the adjective used to describe both people of the nation of Souia-Vey, and things of or from Souia-Vey. There are not any inconsistencies with the usage of these words.

Viamont / Viamonter / Viamontian

Viamont, Viamonter, and Viamontian are the adjectives used to describe both people of the nation of Viamont, and things of or from Viamont. Viamontian is most commonly used. Rarely, Viamonter has been used.

In Universe

In the text The Reign of Alfrega, written by the Aluvian scholar Midistaff the Learned, Viamontian is used as an adjective to describe the people of Viamont. Viamont is used an adjective to describe things from Viamont, e.g. Viamont lace. Viamont also appears to be used as adjective to describe things related to people of Viamont, e.g. The Viamont invasion and Viamont Royal Governor. Viamont Toast, an Aluvian delicacy, is another example of Viamont being used as an adjective to describe something from Viamont. In the historical overview titled The History of Auberean, an Isparian scholar known as A Learned Sage used Viamont as an adjective describing things of Viamont (overlord of Viamont, Viamont invasion, and Viamont lords).

In the text To Be A Shadow, written by the Gharu'rndim historical figure Mansur al-Rajan, Viamonter is used as an adjective to describe the people of Viamont. In an introduction to Aluvian history, a scholar on Dereth used Viamonter as an adjective to describe the people of Viamont. In an introduction to Gharu'ndim history, a scholar on Dereth used Viamonter as an adjective to describe the people of Viamont. Later on, Vexorg of Thistledown used Viamonter in the Aluvian heritage book The D00dz in the same manner.

By Portal Year 16, when the people of Dereth learned about the kingdon of New Viamont on the Halaetan Isles, Viamonter seemed to have fallen out of usage, and Viamontian was used to describe both the people of Viamont and things of Viamont. Viamont still sees some usage as an adjective, though. Captains Nyino, Sovano, and Anrayl all call use the phrases, "Viamont Portal Platforms," and, "prevent the Viamonts from reinforcing."

Game Development

Viamonter was a term used in the early development of the game. When writing for Throne of Destiny, developers went with the term Viamontian from The Reign of Alfrega. Although Viamont was still used as an adjective, it doesn't follow the same pattern as it did in earlier work, and was possibly an error.

Conclusion

Viamontian appears to be the proper term, although occasionally Aluvians and Gharu'ndim have used Viamonter and Viamont as an adjective.
