3D Accelerators

Asked: 2001.01.01
Name: Kevin Murphy
Question Title: 3D Accelerators
Category: Graphics
Question: Hi,

I'm fairly new to the more technical aspects of computers, in particular 3D cards. I have a PowerVL and Direct3D card, but not 3Dfx. Does AC support either or does it require solely 3Dfx? And secondly, how commonly do modern video games in general support PowerVL or Direct3D? Thanks!

Answer: Any decent 3d card supports Direct3d, as it's pretty much the standard API for 3d graphics these days. AC doesn't require or do anything special for 3dfx cards, and I personally prefer cards from Nvidia, as I've found thier drivers to be more stable than most other cards.

I don't know of any developers doing special support for PowerVR cards, in fact, I'm not sure if they're even made anymore.
