Where are we at? link

I wanted to give an update on where we are.

I finished documenting and preparing the files players will need for all the SQL set up. We are working on getting documentation for setting up the patch server and and gls servers. I am also checking to see how a player can configure a local one person server with a simplified set up so they can play solo or in a LAN environment but I don't know yet if it will be possible to do without the full login process.

Warner Bros. confirms Turbine layoffs [Updated] link
Update: Warner Bros. has confirmed unspecified layoffs by issuing the following statement to Massively: "As part of our normal business process, we're routinely looking at the strategic alignment of our company. Unfortunately, in order for us to invest in growth areas at Turbine, we have to eliminate some positions. These are always tough decisions, which we don't approach lightly, but it's crucial that Turbine is structured in a way that reflects the current and coming marketplace."

Update on Final Billing For Asheron’s Call and Asheron's Call 2 link
As of August 2014, Asheron’s Call and Asheron's Call 2 will no longer charge a subscription fee for players. The last payments will be processed on June 31st, making July the final “paid” month. Note that this means some players will technically receive some portion of July free as a result, as we have decided to absorb the cost and not run partial payments to cover it. Other important information for the transition:

  • After the transition, new accounts can be created with a one-time $10 purchase through our normal sign-up page
  • We will no longer be performing MSN Zone migrations after May 31st (click here for more information regarding MSN Zone Migrations)
  • Any inactive subscriptions that players wish to access after the transition will require a one-time activation fee of $10 via the myaccount website
  • Note that after the transition, help requests will only be available regarding harassment issues or account assistance with the $10 one-time activation purchase.
  • The AC forums will remain up and available

We also wanted to provide an update regarding “community” servers. Our current plan is to offer the first player run server packages and to open up our player run server sub-forums by the end of the year. Our first offering will be a basic AC1 server and client download. We expect the first offering to be light on documentation, as it is intended for enthusiasts with experience in setting up servers and dealing with networking. While set up instructions will be offered on these new sub-forums, this initial offering will be intended to be used in conjunction with the forums to allow the community to begin the process of running servers and creating documentation for that process.

Bonus Experience and Luminance Weekend - May 30th through June 2nd link

Asheron's Call will be having a Bonus Weekend this coming weekend. All experience and Luminance gains will be increased by an additional 50% for a total of 150% gained! The weekend will last from Friday evening to Tuesday morning.

The length of the downtime is unrelated to the patch itself.

The changes:

  • Players should now be able to complete the Paragon Weapon steps.
  • Healing in combat mode now has a difficulty modifier of 1.1, down from 1.3.
  • Alternate currency promissory notes are now tradeable.
  • Landscape trees are now in full bloom.

I am preparing a patch to fix the problem with the 33rd level of Paragon weapons. Since I have to patch, I am planning on spending some extra time to add in a few small tweaks. I want to do the following:

  • Fix the 33rd Paragon weapon quest.
  • Reduce the difficulty of healing in combat mode. It is currently a multiplier of 1.3 on Difficulty, I am thinking a 1.1.
  • Promissory Note for Alt Currency will be Tradeable.
  • Trees will be returned to their full summer glory.
  • I will look into another Bonus XP weekend.
  • I will look into the possibility of live events at least for the largest servers.
  • The Gauntlet 20 hour timer is there to reduce the chance of people hogging the Gauntlet.
  • I will look into the design intent of the creatures in the Gauntlet that are going invulnerable.

February

Some February 2014 event details have been announced. Link

I know players are anxiously waiting for an update about the state of Asheron’s Call. (This is probably because I promised to have an update early this week.) We want to have an honest discussion about our future plans, even though we still have outstanding challenges to solve before we can put those plans into place.

We are working hard on the February update, and we hope to have the update finished this week. We are aiming for a patch a week from Tuesday, on March 4th. As always, if we run into bugs or problems that date might have to change. This caveat is why we generally don’t release dates before the patch is approved, but in this case I suspect players would rather have tentative information than none at all.

The February update includes some cool new features:

  • The random rewards for the Viridian Rise have been reworked and most of the consumable rewards have been removed.
  • A brand new coliseum to challenge players and top end characters.
  • Enhancements to the three Societies, the Celestial Hand, the Eldrytch Web, and the Radiant Blood.
  • Paragon weapons. Characters can slowly enhance their favorite weapons by forging them into Paragon weapons. The process that will send characters all over Dereth to prove themselves by completing heroic tasks and gaining Luminance. Though the process is involved, Paragon weapons gain levels and empower the user with substantial benefits. The process can enhance melee weapons, missile weapons or casters.
  • Enlightenment. A system designed for our most dedicated players, Enlightenment allows a character who has reached the pinnacle of levels and Luminance to let it all go and start over. The process of Enlightenment is certainly not for the faint of heart, but enlightenment will provide an avenue for players to prove that they are some of the most hardcore players of the game.

Once this next update is in the hands of the players, the updates to Asheron’s Call will be limited. We intend to fix critical bugs and continue maintenance and support on the game. While there is always a chance we will put out a small update if time permits, players should have the expectation that updates will be limited to maintenance, bug fixes, and perhaps balance iterations of February content such as the new Colosseum.
